21Buchanan VFD puts grant award to use
Buchanan VFD was recently awarded the Super Vac Knight Light emergency scene lighting system via the Metro Fire Grant program. Buchanan VFD joins the Crims Chapel VFD (also a Metro Fire grant award recipient) in using their grant award product shortly after placing it in service, as the department responded to a night time incident involving a large tree that had fallen across a major highway, resulting in a vehicle crashing into the downed tree. Assistant Chief David Lackey, stated the “Knight Light lit up the scene as if it were high noon and allowed the fire fighters to expedite clearing the roadway while warning on-coming traffic of the road hazard.” Fire Chief Phil Reynolds expressed his appreciation to Metro Fire and Super Vac for the grant program, and as a recipient, how it has improved the safeness of their fire fighters at night time incidents.
Not only is this the first apparatus mounted emergency scene lighting system in the Buchanan VFD, but the first for any fire department in Llano County. This department has 20 members and is located in eastern Llano County in Central Texas.
“This is an indication of the need for equipment for fire departments across Texas and how poor funding affects those who provide fire service to their communities,” said Craig Russell, president of Metro Fire. “We’re happy to see a need fulfilled in a very deserving area. This experience is why Metro Fire did the grant program. Not just for the safety of the community, but for the firefighters.”
