17Crims Chapel puts Grant Award to use
Weeks after receiving a set of Holmatro rescue tools via the Metro Fire Grant Program, Crims Chapel was able to put them to use. On Monday, March 7, a wreck between a car and a pickup truck took place. The pickup hit the drivers side of small car with heavy intrusion into front seat area. Extrication took about 30 minutes due to drivers leg being pinned between door intrusion and steering wheel. The patient was flown by medial helicopter to Tyler from scene and is expected to recover fully.
This is their first complete hydraulic rescue tool system. Until now, Crims Chapel VFD has had to rely on mutual aid from the Kilgore or Henderson Fire Departments to assist them if they required vehicle extrication.
“We were able to provide a set of rescue tools to a fire department and within a few weeks Crims Chapel was called out and the tools were used to remove a local citizen from a wreck,” says Craig Russell, president of Metro Fire. “It makes us all proud here at Metro Fire to be a part of something like this.”
Chief Vinson commented that the value of the Holmatro Rescue Tool grant was in excess of their annual budgeted funds from their emergency services district which is $20,000. Chief Vinson expressed his appreciation to Metro Fire and Craig Russell for offering the grant program to Texas fire departments.
