    Spartan Chassis Redefines Firefighter Safety

     

    Did you know that in 2010 there were 4,380 injuries to personnel either responding to or returning from a fire? Spartan Chassis has always been on the cutting edge of fire truck design and occupant safety. Today, Spartan Chassis reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the men and women who serve our communities with new additions to the Advanced Protection System (APS)*:

    • Eight (8) airbags in the cab with four (4) INDUSTRY FIRST airbag positions.
    • Side curtain airbags up to seven times larger than the competition.
    • INDUSTRY FIRST outboard sensors control airbag deployment and protect cab occupants from side-impact collisions.
    • An INDUSTRY FIRSTintelligent seatbelt system.

     

    STATE-OF-THE-ART OUTBOARD SENSORS CONTROL MULTI-IMPACT AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT

     

    Product Details Spartan Chassis’ state-of-the-art outboard sensors protect occupants in the cab from multi-angle impacts. These sensors are mounted at the outer perimeter of the cab providing a “zone of safety” inside the cab. Each sensor communicates back to the restraint control module that monitors airbag deployment and under what conditions.

     

    image unavailable The outboard sensors allow for faster deployment of airbags and protect occupants from side-impact collisions, rollovers and occupant ejection. Spartan is the first, and only, company in the industry whose airbags protect cab occupants from side impacts, unlike their competitors, whose side airbags only deploy in the case of a rollover.

    Full side curtain airbags Industry First

    Product Details Spartan Chassis’ front-side airbags are three times larger than their competitor’s. Each of Spartan’s rear side airbags are custom sized for the crew area of every cab they build, with their largest rear side airbag covering seven times the area of their competitor’s.

    Driver knee airbags Industry First

    image unavailable The new driver knee airbags lock the lower body in place so the upper body can be slowed by the seat belts and caught by the steering wheel airbag. This protects the driver against contact injuries resulting from hitting the instrument panel or other interior points of contact.

     Product Details In the event of a front impact collision, the upper body is slowed by the seat belt and caught by the steering wheel airbag. This protects the driver against contact injuries resulting from hitting the instrument panel or other hardware.

    Officer knee airbag

    image unavailable The impact resulting from a front on collision could do serious damage to the lower body. The officers’ knee airbag absorbs much of the forward momentum, locking the lower body in place while the upper body is slowed by the seat belts protecting the passenger from deceleration injuries.

     

    Advanced seat belts Industry First

    Advanced Seat BeltsThe final element in the Advanced Protection System is the new, INDUSTRY FIRST, intelligent seat belt system which pulls the occupant into the seat in the event of an impact, or rollover. These intelligent seat belts have pyrotechnic pre-tensioners in the retractors instead of just a buckle. Spartan validated that pre-tensioners in the retractor provide more force during the initial lock. After the occupant is pulled into the seat, load limiters release some of the webbing to control the occupant’s deceleration into the airbag system. These new seat belts help control the strain on each occupant while reducing pressure on the chest and torso, reducing seat belt related injuries.
