29Winter Service Tips
The weather has turned much colder in many parts of Texas, and that means there are some things that must considered to ensure that your fire apparatus is in working order for the season.
Here are a few tips to review:
-
Check the condition of your batteries: The cold weather takes a toll on batteries so to ensure proper starting, make sure your batteries are in good connection and the battery cables are clean and tight.
-
Ensure the heater valve for the inside cab air is turned on: When heat is needed inside the cab to warm up firefighters, make sure the heater valve is turned on. However when A/C is needed, make sure the valve is turned off. Some units have automatic valves. On Spartan cabs, the heater valve is found under the officer’s side floor board. (Depending on the type of engine your apparatus has; the heater valve could be located on the engine block near the engine oil cooler). If you need assistance locating this valve, please give us a call at 817.467.0911, and a qualified service technician will be happy to assist you.
-
Check the operation and condition of the coolant system: You should have your cooling system tested at least once a year. The system should be pressure-tested for leaks; hoses should be inspected to ensure they are in good condition; fan belts should be inspected for cracks and necessary adjustments; and most importantly, the condition of the coolant should be tested to ensure the PH level is within specification.
-
Check the defroster operation: Make sure the air directional vents are operating properly and that you can control the air flow direction.
-
Check the condition of the fire pump and ensure there are no water leaks: if the engine is in a non-heated station where temperatures reach freezing, it is a good idea to drain water from plumbing, valves, and fire pump. As we all know when water freezes, it expands and in many cases with water sitting in the plumbing, valves will split and the plumbing will crack.
-
Check your tires and air pressure: You should inspect your tire tread depth (use a penny to determine acceptable tread depth), wear pattern, and make sure you have the correct amount of air pressure in all of your tires. Remember, unequal pressure in the tires could result in steering and braking issues.
-
Check your tire chains: If your units are equipped with automatic tire chains, make sure that they are in operating conditions and that the chains are used on icey road conditions.
